Gross pay by campus
Gross pay includes base salary plus clinical, administrative and other compensation, and covers
only the part of the year the person was employed, so partial-year hires and departures pull the median down.
About this data: Pay figures come directly from UC's own public payroll disclosure, limited to
physician (Health Sciences Compensation, “HCOMP”) titles at the six UC campuses with medical schools.
UC Riverside's medical school opened in 2013, so it has no psychiatrists before 2014. Residents and fellows are
redacted by UC under federal student-privacy law and are not included.
Who counts as a psychiatrist: UC's payroll data does not record specialty. Specialty was inferred
for each campus by cross-referencing names against the public
NPI Registry , CMS's
National Downloadable File
and each health system's own provider directory. This page includes everyone whose inferred specialty is general
psychiatry or a psychiatric subspecialty: child & adolescent, addiction, consultation-liaison (psychosomatic
medicine), forensic, geriatric, and behavioral neurology & neuropsychiatry. Neurologists are excluded even though
the NPI Registry files them under the same “Psychiatry & Neurology” board. So are sleep and pain medicine,
and addiction medicine certified through internal or family medicine. Entries marked with
† had more than one plausible name match in the registry and carry more
name-collision risk than the rest. Registry matches to a non-physician provider were discarded unless that person was
the only California provider with the name and practiced near the campus.
Psychiatrists are undercounted. Anyone whose specialty could not be confidently resolved cannot
be identified as a psychiatrist and is missing here. That is named physicians across
the six campuses, and the gap is largest in older years, since people who have left UC are no longer in current
directories. Headcounts are best read as a lower bound. This is a best-effort estimate, not an official UC record,
and should not be treated as verified identification of any individual's medical specialty.
